Little Toot Celebration Ideas

2007 was the anniversary of the 100th birthday of Hardie Gramatky, author and illustrator of Little Toot and a restored classic edition (with artwork being returned to its former glory) was published in September 2007. If your library would like to celebrate this event, here are some possible event ideas. You can also click here for information about the Little Toot drawing contest.

Storytime

The library can host a reading and, if they’d like, a showing of “Little Toot Melody Time” (available on Melody Time Disney Gold Classic Collection)

Tugboat Parade

The library can invite kids to create tugboat costumes and join in a tugboat parade.

Tugboat Crossing

The library can have children create “tugboat crossing” road signs. Place them around the library with displays of Little Toot and other boat books.

Finger Puppets

Create tugboat finger puppets. Have kids draw a little tugboat, then have them cut it out and tape it to fit their finger. They can also tape their tugboat to a popsicle stick for use as a stick puppet.

Little Toot Celebration

Librarians, teachers and parents can go to the Little Toot web site for party ideas and promotional items to print out as well as party ideas for invitations, party hats, games (ie. Tape the Smoke to the Tugboat Smokestack, Little Toot Tic-Tac-Toe, Figure 8 maze game) and coloring sheets. (This area is currently under construction, so please check back soon!)

Tugboats Save the Day Watercolor Contest

Libraries can ask kids to create a watercolor picture of Little Toot (this reflects the medium Gramatky used). Kids can use watercolor paints, markers or crayons to create their picture.

This activity can be done at home and brought into the library or can be done as a library event. For more information, entry form and official rules, click here.
